Northern Romania 2017

Enjoying lunch somewhere in the middle of nowhere

Inna's father and brother came to Romania for a week for a holiday and we had a plan ready for them. We had read and heard about northern Romania a lot but we had never had enough time to visit it because it's relatively far away and the roads are not very good there. This time we had the whole week free and it was just enough to see the things we wanted without being too much in a hurry.

Our guests slept most of the nights in our car and we slept in our tent. We started the trip by driving absolutely horrible gravel roads in the mountains to reach a tiny cave monastery surrounded by stunning scenery in the middle of nowhere. From there we continued to visit some of the painted UNESCO churches of Moldavia and ran into an interesting World War I memorial on the way.

Following the memorial we visited the lovely city of Piatra Neamț and climbed a Via Ferrata route together with Igor, Inna's brother, not far from the city. Igor said that he was a bit afraid of heights but it didn't really show! The route was graded C/D on a scale from A to E where A is the easiest and E is the hardest. The only problem we faced on the way was a father and his son who didn't realize that making stones fall on other people is not a very good idea in the mountains. Luckily the stones missed us and we were able to pass them to avoid further danger.

I had missed via ferratas and climbing outside a lot!
