Malacca

The idyllic, old center of Malacca

We had realized the day before that Malacca wasn't a huge city so we figured that we could sleep long and still have enough time to see everything there is to see in the center. Around noon we left the hotel and started walking in the old part of Malacca. The official tourist agency didn't have any free maps but we had seen a map somewhere and knew the general direction of the places of interest.

In most places there weren't any tourists and we enjoyed the quiet city by walking in parks and along the river that is running through the center. By the river we admired sights from the colonial era of Malaysia, like ruins of old fortresses and even a whole ship. Soon the weather became unbearably hot and we fled the heat to a big supermarket.

We had heard that we could find cheap electronics in Malaysia, but the phones and laptops we checked weren't that much cheaper than in Europe. We also didn't want to end up with a fake product so Inna was forced to survive without a phone for a while longer.

The fortress on the hill

When the sun had gone a bit lower, we left the shop and climbed to an old fortress on the green hill in the center of the old town. The view from there was nice, and it seemed to be the only place in town with bigger groups of tourists. Next to the fortress there was a graveyard but I must say that it wasn't worth visiting.

Before walking back to our hotel we wanted to see the sea. The locals had told us earlier that it's not suitable for swimming, and they were right. The water seemed dirty and the seashore was packed with hotels. The walk wasn't for nothing though as on the way back we found a great pizza place and had a great dinner there!
