Just before Inna's father and brother visited us my father decided to pay us a surprise visit as well. During the long weekend we explored what western Romania has to offer. First we went for a boat ride together to see a beautiful gorge called the Iron Gates on the border between Romania and Serbia. The highlight of this gorge is, together with the stunning nature, the rock sculpture of Decebalus. Decebalus was the last king of Dacia and the sculpture dedicated to him stands over 40m tall.

Following the gorge and the rural hill areas of the west we drove to the Transfăgărășan highway. The highway was a very different experience from the first time we were there in the winter as it was quite snowy and cold and we had to road pretty much to ourselves. This time there was no snow to speak of and there were so many cars that we got stuck in a jam for an hour or so! The place looks stunning but I'd recommend going there in the autumn instead to avoid the crowds. Also it has to mentioned that the southern side of the highway is utterly boring compared to the northern side. I would even recommend driving up and down the northern side if you don't have to cross the mountain range to avoid the long and arduous drive in the south.
